Tips for getting great hair for your headshot photoshoot

Hey ladies! Let’s talk about hair. Specifically, how to ensure you have great hair for your headshot portrait.

Every professional — regardless of the industry you’re in —  should have a great headshot of themselves. You need a recent, professional-looking photo to use when promoting yourself on social media, in industry trade publications, for speaking events, customer communications, and for the countless other ways you use to introduce yourself to the world.

One of the keys to getting a great photo is to show up looking polished — and a little touch of glam never hurts!

Once you have your headshot photoshoot booked, it’s time to start thinking about what to wear, how to do your makeup and how to style your hair. This is a great time to see your hair stylist to freshen up your cut or to touch up your color. Or you can book an appointment with a stylist the day of your photoshoot for a professional blow-out and style, to ensure you’ll have a great hair day for your portraits. And who doesn’t want to have a great hair day?!

I teamed up with Tawnya Proctor of Noni Salon in Leucadia, California to talk about the best ways to ensure you’ll have photo-worthy hair.

Here are some of the tips Tawnya gives in the video above:

hair stylist1. When possible, work with a stylist the day of your photoshoot. Get that fresh-from-the-salon look by getting a blow-out and a style.

UNITE Smooth and Shine

2. If you’re doing your hair at home, use a good hair dryer that can provide adequate heat, and set your hair in large rollers. Take the rollers out just before your headshot, and you’ll have a sleek, polished look for your photos.

sulfate and paraban free hair products

3. Use sulfate-free and paraban-free hair products whenever you can. Sulfates and parabans add lots of chemicals to your hair and body, so the more we can eliminate these in our styling products, the better for you … and for Mother Earth!

UNITE smooth and shine

4. Put smoothing products in before you blow out your hair, for a smooth and shiny look. In this video, Nicolle prepped with UNITE 7second spray and Tawnya added UNITE Smooth & Shine at the end to bring out that … well, smoothness and shine.
